Principles & Methodologies in Intercultural Learning
Convener : Andrea Henriques List of participants : Fatou, Robert, Christina. Discussion and recommendations (important guideline : KISS [Keep It Simple, Stupid]) :
METHODS :
  Intercultural learning is difficult to teach, you have to experience it ;
  Non-formal education as the best tool : games, role-play, simulations ;
  Methods to help to reflect why people act/are different ;
  Examples “Barnga” – card games, tables with different rules ; working with concepts/realities such as : inclusion, exclusion, communication, co-operation and so on.
  “Albatross” – simulation to deconstruct ethnocentrism ;
  “Shoes Dynamic” – ask shoe size at the beginning of presentation and ask to change and talk about why there is resistance.
  Work with news from the media to avoid stereotypes/prejudices.
  Use drawings, stories for children. VALUES/PRINCIPLES :
  Deconstruct ethnocentrism – “Put Yourself in others’ shoes” ;
  Culture is not just country ;
  Importance of communication ;
  Be aware that there’s something that we can’t see but don’t try to interpret it (iceberg model for example), visible/invisible culture.
  Cohesions between practice of the educator/animateur and what we transmit (example : values like inclusion and participation).
  Promote awareness about different lifestyles.
