On behalf of the Association of Local Democracy Agencies (ALDA), I have the pleasure of inviting you to the international conference “Dealing with a past left unsaid – Challenges and opportunities for institutions and civil society actors”.

The conference will take place in Strasbourg from 21 to 23 November 2011. It will unite around 80 participants from several European countries, all professionals of historical education and active remembrance (educators, teachers, researchers, memorial curators and peace educators).

Through presentations on the treatment of repressed pasts in Europe and exchange between the participants, we are confident that the conference will bring new insights on how to deal with difficult past events.

The event will combine different methods to promote a wide debate benefiting from both multilateral and more specific perspectives :
 Informal exchange with other participants will be a central element of the conference.

 participating in a visit to the memorial of Alsace-Moselle in Schirmeck.

This conference is a core event of the European project PEACE (Peace Education for Active Citizenship in Europe), aiming at creating a network of structures working on peace education, citizenship and Human Rights in the intent to support active remembrance of 20th century European history. You will find a description of the project attached.

Dealing with historical education as a professional or volunteer, we believe that while you will benefit from the other participants’ knowledge, your own experience will also be of great value to the discussions.
